Phlebotomy for health care personnel and what is the future of phlebotomy?
Phlebotomy is undergoing a major transformation in recent years, and is not unusual to find now phlebotomy for health care personnel since more and more health care staff undergo jobs which were traditionally done only by phlebotomists a few years ago. More and more health care personnel such as nurses and even patient care technicians(PCTs) are required to draw blood, collect samples, all which are phlebotomists duty jobs.
Some healthcare managers may even question why they should keep a full time phlebotomist when they can do a one day phlebotomy training for healthcare personnel already hired and they just need to reajust their list of duties. So, whats left for phlebotomists, which perform such a specialized skill?
While nurses can perform easy draws, for more difficult ones a specialist is necessary. So, phlebotomists may find themsleves working with difficult patients such as grave ill patients, children or elderly.
Or, they can adapt and specialize in other close related fileds such as EKG or radiology. This will help them find higher paid jobs and make sure they will still make a living in few years time.
The good news is that not in every hospital, managers officers think the same. Some still want to retain full phlebotomists staff since they recognized the benefits of doing so in the long term by avoiding malpractice cases and their financial burden. One of the reason why more and more hospitals start doing phlebotomy training for their healthcare staff is to reduce costs with employment. So, more and more phlebotomists may find themselves working part-time or when it fits their schedule.
If you are not offered a phlebotomy training if you already work in health care system such as hospitals or laboratories, but you would like to get trained in drawing blood, then you just need a short phlebotomy training and get a phlebotomy license and you are a step ahead of others in landing a phlebotomy job. For this reason phlebotomy for health care personnel is a logic thing to do.
